In 1978, Heads of States of 136 countries and Heads of 67 organizations gathered in Alma-Ata, Kazakhstan, to commit to ‘Health for All’. In that conference, they endorsed the Declaration of Alma-Ata, which formed the foundation for the last 40 years of global primary health care efforts. The Declaration articulated a set of principles for health organizations to provide essential health services using scientifically effective and socially acceptable methods with appropriate technology through the use of community health workers, community engagement and multi-sectoral action. The health for all movement has been ambitious and visionary. Forty years later, this vision has not been realized and the world is still facing challenges. The 2018 Astana Declaration emphasized the essential role of primary health care to provide health for all around the world. Today the world has stand together to rejuvenate and revitalize primary health care.
